The CMA convention in NYC is getting close! And, more volunteers are needed for critiques. Based on the numbers, a large number of students at a large number of schools have benefited from these critiques, which are done by some of the best in the business. That's you!

Critique Schedule:

Sunday, March 14 – 1-5 p.m.
Monday, March 15 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

CLICK HERE to review the critique schedule. Thanks to the volunteers listed here but We Still Need You. Sessions are half-hour sessions. Please CLICK HERE to send us an email telling us how many half-hour critiques you can do and your desired start and stop time.

Registration for critiques will take place near the registration area — look for the signs — on Sunday, March 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Space permitted, some critique assignments may be reserved Monday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

Tales from FERPA crypt

Tell us your FERPA horror stories. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act was intended to protect educational records. However, as many know, some institutions have extended the definition of "educational" records to keep what should be public information behind a veil of secrecy. Kevin Schwartz at the University of North Carolin at Chapel Hill is collecting FERPA "horror story" anecdotes in an effort to make a case for reform of FERPA restrictions. Multimedia: Best of KC photos 2005

Student Photojournalists took part in a photo contest in Kansas City. Judges for the contest were Chris Carroll, Vanderbilt University; John Foxworth, University of Texas; and Bradley Wilson, North Carolina State University.

In general, the judges wanted photos that fit the assignment in some way. During the critiques, they made numerous comments about cropping tight and playing around with light rather than just having flat or backlit photos. Photos that were tightly cropped to be extreme horizontal or extreme vertical stood out. Photos that took advantage of unique lighting around the city stood out. And photos that captured the character of the city, either through the people, the places or the events, really stood out.

3rd place: Xavier Mascarenas, University of New Mexico
Drummer John Miles, II, with the variety band "Off the Wall," packs up after a Friday night gig in Union Station's Union Cafe. He moved to Kansas City with his family 3 years ago from Long Beach, Ca., and says he loves the cityfor its music scene.
