Adviser Award Nominations Due Early 2010

College Media Advisers annual awards program is soliciting nominees for the 2010 class of excellence in media advising. Nominations should be made in advance of the information packets that will be mailed in early April 2010. The information requested in the packets must be assembled and returned to the CMA awards committee by May 1, 2010. For a copy of the awards nomination form as a PDF file, CLICK HERE.

CMA members may be nominated in any of the following categories:

Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service Award
This award perpetuates the memory of Reid H. Montgomery, president of the National Council of College Publications Advisers from 1969-71 and past treasurer and newsletter editor. He died in 1993. The award is presented to an individual or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to collegiate media or media advising.

Hall of Fame
Persons being considered for this award must have contributed to collegiate journalism education for 20 or more years while an active member of College Media Advisers.

The John A. Boyd Hall of Fame Award honors those longtime members of College Media Advisers whose dedication, commitment and sacrifices have contributed to the betterment and value of student media programs both on their campus and nationally.

It also recognizes the contributions of CMA members who have actively contributed to the organization through extensive and various service on committees, the board of directors and other leadership roles and have presented programs and sessions at meetings which have been insightful, well-prepared and relevant.

Louis E. Ingelhart First Amendment Award
The namesake of this award is Louis E. Ingelhart, retired journalism professor at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. Ingelhart has dedicated much of his life to studying, writing and teaching the First Amendment. Recipients have made extraordinary, long-term contributions in support of the First Amendment.

Noel Ross Strader Memorial Award
This award perpetuates the memory of Noel Ross Strader, a long-time University of Houston professor and administrator in journalism. Recipients are full-time teachers or advisers in campus journalism. They must have exercised the principle of freedom of the press at some risk to personal or professional welfare or they must have made a significant contribution to the graphic or physical progress or a campus publication.

Golden Leaf Memorial
Established by the CMA Board of Directors in 1992, the Golden Leaf Memorial award was inspired by the late Terry Vander Hayden, former vice president for member services and media adviser at Western Kentucky University and Franklin College (IN). The award recognized those who have served in a leadership role in CMA as a member of the Board of Directors, Advisory Council or founder. Recipients have made a significant difference in furthering student media.

Ronald E. Spielberger Service to CMA Award
Established to honor College Media Advisers long time executive director, Ron Spielberger, this award is given to an individual who has provided exemplary service to the organization.

Distinguished Adviser Awards Program
Advisers who have provided exemplary service to their institutions and the students they serve may be nominated in one of nine categories as follows:.
Distinguished Four-Year Newspaper Advisers
Distinguished Four-Year Yearbook Advisers
Distinguished Four-Year Magazine Advisers
Distinguished Four-Year Business Advisers
Distinguished Four-Year Broadcast Advisers
Distinguished Multi-Media Advisers
Distinguished Two-Year Newspaper Advisers
Distinguished Two-Year Yearbook Advisers
Distinguished Two-Year Broadcast Advisers

Honor Roll Advisers
In 1982, CMA also established a series of Honor Roll Awards for media advisers with fewer than five years of experience.

Honorary Members
Honorary membership is conferred upon an individual or organization by majority vote of the Board of Directors. Honorary members are deemed worthy based on contributions and service to CMA and to student media.

Lifetime Members
Established by a bylaws revision in 1990, lifetime membership may be conferred by majority vote of the Board of Directors on individuals who are retiring and who have had active CMA membership status for at least 10 years. The board deems them worthy of the honor.
