Summer Advising Workshop

Advisers to gather in Florida

for summer workshop activities

Thirty five college media advisers will be heading to St. Petersburg, Fla., this week to attend the inaugural edition of the Summer Advisers Workshop.

The four-day event begins with a reception on Sunday, June 28, followed by three days of intensive instruction in two tracks designed for new advisers and veterans.

For many years, College Media Advisers had held separate workshops. The New Advisers Workshop was held during the summer as a boot camp to prepare newcomers for their early years of advising college media.  Advising College Media Today was held in conjunction with Associated Collegiate Press' summer workshop and offered a theme-based refresher for advisers.

CMA's Board of Directors, in an effort to consolidate service programs, desided to merge the two training events into a single effort that would provide needed training for new advisers while offering development activities for veteran colleagues.

Some sessions at SAW -- such as those addressing technology and legal matters, for example -- will be presented for a combined audience of newcomers and veterans. Then, while long-time advisers are exploring strategies on how to structure and manage their operations to succeed in the evolving world of converged media, new advisers will be reviewing the basics of their operations such as budgeting, finances, recruitment, training and related topics.

Bother groups will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a day-long series of instructional activiteis at the nearby Poynter Institute, when multimedia storytelling, social media, and other cutting edge topics will be explored in depth by experts from the institute.

The SAW event is predeced by CMA's Board of Director Annual retreat, where the existing board under the leadership of CMA President Ken Rosenauer will be joined by President-elect Sally Turner and Vice President-elect David Swartzlander for board business and strategic planning activities.
