The CMA board has re-convened the Bylaws Committee after three years, and I, Kelley Lash, am serving as chair. I am glad to work with this group of people again and to look at ways to improve some of CMA’s policies.
The committee is:
- Jay Hartwell, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Retired
- Kelley Lash, Rice University
- Sally Renaud, Eastern Illinois University
- Susan Smith, South Dakota State University
- Hillary Warren, Otterbein University
There are two things we are tasked with examining, and we are starting with our Code of Ethical Behavior.
If you look at the code, it is outdated and not reflective of our membership. So we are looking for your thoughts. If you could take a few moments to read over the code and then answer a few questions, this will help the committee provide recommendations.
Two members of CMA’s standing Diversity & Inclusion Committee — Shelley Blundell from Youngstown State University and James Carviou from Missouri Western University — will join us in working on the bylaws update. Their goal is to help us make the language in the bylaws more inclusive.
After we have completed this step, the board has asked us to consider whether CMA should have a membership suspension process. The committee will again reach out to you and ask for feedback and suggestions. If we do recommend a suspension process, it would be a proposed bylaws change, and that would require a membership vote – perhaps with the CMA elections in April 2021.
Please help us look at our ethical code and make sure it is representative of the CMA you want to be a part of. Please let us know if there is anything additional you would like the committee to consider. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at email@example.com.
